Originally founded in December 1949, Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) has developed into a Project 211 national key university administered directly by the Ministry of Education in conjunction with the Shanghai municipal government. Guided by the motto “Integrity, Vision and Academic Excellence”, SISU has gained international recognition as a multidisciplinary university producing highly skilled graduates known for their foreign language proficiency.


After over 60 years of development, SISU has successfully developed a well-balanced academic structure focused on the teaching of foreign languages and literatures, and featuring five specialized divisions in the humanities, pedagogy, economics, management science and jurisprudence.


SISU has been actively involved in international cooperation and academic exchange and promotes cultural understanding within a diverse global environment. SISU has established cooperation with over 200 universities in fifty countries and regions, and maintained close contacts with the United Nations, European Union and other international organizations. As part of its efforts to promote Chinese culture around the world, SISU has jointly established four Confucius Institutes at Naples Eastern University in Italy, Osaka Sangyo University in Japan, Pontifical Catholic University in Peru, and University of Szeged in Hungary respectively.


As a multicultural university, SISU is committed to developing a pool of creative and specialized talent with cross-cultural awareness and language proficiency to meet the demands of global markets. Over the past sixty years, SISU graduates have contributed to China’s economic and social development, and have promoted friendly exchange with people around the world.
