Mr. Dmytro Ponomarenko, Ukraine’s new Consul-General in Shanghai, and Mr. Igor Vodolazhskyi, the Consul, visited the Songjiang campus of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) to attend and record a students' poetry recital early this March. The recital was in memory of Taras Shevchenko, the most famous and talented poet of Ukraine, and in the framework of 202nd anniversary of the poet's birth.

Mr. Ponomarenko, delivered an introduction about the scheduled arrangements in memory of Taras Shevchenko in 2016. He praised the poet as a “tsar” in the inner world of Ukrainians. As soon as a group of SISU students majoring in Ukrainian studies recited impassioned verses of a long poem in Ukrainian, he showed his appreciation towards those talented young Ukrainian speakers. Mr. Ponomarenko thanked all the officials for their efforts in organizing the activity and expressed his hope for expanding and deepening mutually beneficial cooperation.

Ms. Pi Fanqian, the council chair of the School of Russian and Eurasian Studies, and Dr. Xu Lisha, a lecturer of Ukrainian studies received the Consul-General and his colleagues and joined the whole day event.

The new Ukrainian Consul-General showed particular concern about SISU's academic development of Ukrainian studies. On February 25, right after he took the office, Mr. Ponomarenko visited Professor Zhang Zili, dean of SRES. They discussed about SISU's degree program in Ukrainian language and literature, as well as the research achievements of SISU's Center for Ukraine Studies. Both sides voiced a hope for closer cooperation in the area of Sino-Ukrainian cultural relations and education.
