Professor Cao Deming, President of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), led a delegation to attend China-Egypt University Presidents Forum and China Higher Education Exhibition in Egypt late March, which were held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Egypt.

Themed by the "Belt and Road" and “China-Egypt People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges”, the Forum is the practical action to implement the consensus of the two heads of state after Chinese president Xi Jinping’s historic visiting to Egypt, as a new platform to promote bilateral cooperation in education and China-Egypt friendship.

Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong attended and addressed the closing ceremony. President Cao, together with the presidents of other 14 Egyptian Universities and 19 Chinese Universities, had a heated discussion about youth exchanges and cultural understanding, globalization and localization of higher education, and scientific cooperation and technological innovation. During the meeting, President Cao exchanged views extensively on inter-university relations with the president of Egypt Banha University.

On the China Higher Education Exhibition, Premier Liu visited the booth of SISU and kindly asked President Cao about the exchange scholars and students in Egypt. Liu also expressed her concern for the Egyptian students in SISU. She hoped that SISU could play a more active role in higher education of international students in China.

There was a constant stream of Egyptian students visiting the exhibition booth of SISU. Professor Cao Deming and Professor Zhang Yanli, Dean of SISU’s School of Chinese Studies and Exchange, explained in details about the admission and cultivation policies of overseas students in SISU. During the exhibition, Jiang Lei, a secretary in Embassy of China in Egypt, an alumna of SISU, made a trip there to get informed of SISU’s Going Global strategy.

Wang Duanyong, the exchange scholar in Al-Azhar University, lecturer of SISU’s School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Zhang Wendong and Su Min, the exchange students in Cairo University, students of SISU’s School of Asian and African Studies, participated in the organization and reception work of the Presidents Forum and Higher Education Exhibition. President Cao Deming personally greeted these SISU students and faculty members after the exhibition.

After the exhibition, several Egyptian students got in touch with SISU’s Office of International Students’ Affairs to apply for admissions. In the past several years, about 40 Egyptian students came to SISU by the programs of Shanghai Summer School and Confucius Institute Scholarships. Meanwhile, very year some SISU faculty members and students go to Egypt for research and study. A good momentum of international mobility of students and international research cooperation has been formed.

The China-Egypt University Presidents Forum and the China Higher Education Exhibition, which have promoted SISU’s international influence and global image, are two of our important ways to dock China’s “Belt and Road" initiative. They have also played an important role in promoting international education and developing high-end international talents.
