A New Century Chinese-English Encyclopedic Dictionary, chiefly edited by Professor Dai Weidong, former President of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU),was recently published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press.

The press editors and a team of 41 English teachers from Shanghai universities, including SISU, have spent over 16 years compiling the dictionary since 1998. This was funded by the national publication project.

The dictionary has over 120,000 lexical entries, with their English translation based on the national standard, sufficiently covering 100 terms of different subjects, including culture, society, natural science and engineering.

The dictionary’s 8,105 Chinese characters are from the Standard Chinese Characters Table and its Chinese phonetic notation refers to the Basic Rules of the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet Orthography.

To help readers understand the words’ cultural context, the dictionary has 19 useful appendixes including “A Brief Chart of Chinese Dynasties”, “Chinese National Political Institutions and Organizations”, and “Countries and Capitals of the World”.
