Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) signed an exchange agreement with Leiden University, the Netherlands this early December.
SISU President Cao Deming first outlined for Leiden President Carel Stolker the cooperation between the two universities in the Dutch language major and law major, as well as introducing SISU. Cao also thanked the Dutch consulate in Shanghai for supporting SISU’s development.
President Stolker detailed Leiden’s history, current status, and its development in Sinology and Asian Studies, emphasizing projected academic collaborations with SISU in law, regional studies and China studies.
Leiden University, founded in 1575, is a world-class research university and oldest institution of higher education in the Netherlands. Located in Leiden in the western Netherlands, the university has campuses in The Hague and Amsterdam. It has six schools, 1510 teachers and more than 23,000 students. Leiden has an excellent reputation for internationalization, teaching in English for some undergraduate courses and most of postgraduate courses.
Anneke Adema, Netherlands’ Consul General in Shanghai, said she was greatly impressed by “The Day of the Netherlands,” held in early November at SISU. A Leiden alumna, Ademasaid she hopes the two universities will more closely cooperate in new fields, such as joint master’s or doctoral degree programs, and teachers exchange programs.
Other visiting guests from Leiden University included Prof. Rick Lawson, Dean of School of Law; Prof. Frank Pieke, director of Centre for East Asian Studies; Dr. Eric Beerkens, senior advisor of international affairs; Marieke te Booij,Deputy Division Director of Office of International Cooperation and Exchange; who introduced the university’s majors in international law, European law, Sinology and contemporary Chinese studies, respectively.
