T

wenty-four college students from Chinese universities competed in the first national German competition, which was held on the Hongkou campus of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) on May 20, 2018.

The competition aimed to improve students’ professional skills and cross-cultural communication ability as well as to promote the exchanges among universities on German teaching.

SISU’s team won the Outstanding Award with the highest score and was awarded scholarships for summer semester provided by a German academic center named Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD). The team of Shanghai’s Fudan University received the first prize as a group.

The section of prepared-speech included four topics — “Self-value and social responsibility”, “The German learners’ cultural mission in globalization”, “Human development and technological progress” and “Multilingual+ in the era of Internet+ ”. Students’ performances and insights impressed the judges.

SISU University Council Chair Jiang Feng said he hoped that the competition could connect universities in Europe and China and help diversify students’ way of thinking with a global perspective.

Susanne Lada'a, the German Consulate General in Shanghai and director of the Science Department, said that German, the most widely used language within the European Union, was one of the most important languages in the world. She also pointed out that learning a new foreign language enables students to gain access to other countries’ cultures and job opportunities.
