On April 20, the Museum of World Languages, together with the School of European and Latin American Studies and the Instituto Cervantes Shanghai, successfully held the 2026 UN Spanish Language Day event. Isabel Cervera, Director of the Instituto Cervantes Shanghai, was invited to attend and engage in a discussion with faculty and students.

Wang Xin, Vice President of SISU and Dean of the School of European and Latin American Studies, warmly welcomed Director Cervera. Wang introduced SISU’s international education features, the history of the Spanish language program, and its international exchanges and collaborations. She thanked the Instituto Cervantes Shanghai for its long-standing support of SISU’s Spanish program and expressed hope for deeper future cooperation in Spanish language teaching, Latin American studies, and talent cultivation.

Cervera thanked Wang for the warm reception and introduced the mission and development history of the Instituto Cervantes. She highly praised SISU’s important role and achievements in cultivating Spanish-language talent in China, and expressed her willingness to deepen cooperation in student internships and cultural exchange. Cervera followed her warm remarks with a lecture for Spanish-language students titled “The Global Pulse of Spanish: Cultural Identity and Plural Development”. The lecture was hosted by Yang Ming, Deputy Dean of the School of European and Latin American Studies.

The lecture focused on the global spread and diverse development of Spanish. It explained the rich variants and cultural identity associated with Spanish in different regions and social contexts. It also highlighted the language’s value as a bridge for cross-cultural communication, offering students useful guidance to deepen their language understanding and broaden their international perspective.

During the interactive session, students engaged enthusiastically with the guest, discussing topics such as language learning, dialect differences, and China–Latin America relations.

Mao Xiaohong, Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, and Li Yan, Deputy Director of the Museum of World Languages, attended the event.
